ISS Seminars

Thursday 14 August 2008 — Mary and Elizabeth

Elizabeth was concerned to delegitimate the previous reign of Mary Tudor, and Elizabethan propaganda has tended to mask many of the debts she owed to her half-sister. Mary's success in retrieving the Tudor throne made Elizabeth's claim to the throne more defensible, and Mary obtained the parliamentary confirmation of the powers of a female monarch on which Elizabeth relied. Elizabeth as queen was always reluctant to acknowledge any debts she might owe to these precendents set by Mary.

This seminar will be given by Judith Richards who has taught History at La Trobe University, specializing in Tudor history, and will be held from 7.30 - 9.30 pm in St Peter's Hall on Thursday, August 14. The cost is $15 (concession $12).
See the ISS page for further details.

Tuesday 26 August 2008 — The Tomb of Jesus

Where was Jesus buried? Despite the traditional association of the burial place of Jesus with the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, there have been other attemps to locate and identify the Tomb. Each of the possibilities has given rise to replicas that allowed Christians to experience the respective claims without travelling to the Holy Land.
In this seminar, Canon Andrew McGowan will examine the claims of each contender, and reflect on what they represent. The rival tombs may have as much to say about the religious sensibilities of the proponents as about first-century history, or the location of Jesus' body.

The seminar will held from 7.30 - 9.30 pm in St Peter's Hall on Tuesday, August 26. The cost is $15 (concession $12).
See the ISS page for further details.
